New Jersey Basketball Player Arrested for Domestic Violence

How Can Criminal Convictions and Charges Impact Your Life?

A former, once promising NBA prospect and Bergen Catholic hoops star, Sean Banks, was arrested in January on domestic violence charges. This arrest is the latest incident in a number of criminal issues that the 29 year old Englewood resident has been involved in.

Banks was remanded to Bergen County Jail on $25,000 bail. He faces third-degree domestic violence charges, attempted burglary and violation of a court order. The website reports that Englewood police Captain Timothy Torell states that police were called to a residence on Saint Nicholas Avenue due to a reported disturbance. They discovered Banks nearby and brought him in for questioning. Residents claimed he had tried to break in the front door, demanding to see a woman who is the mother of his children. There is a current court order barring Banks from being at the home or seeing the residents, according to Torell.

Banks was not always in trouble with the law and has been in the press for much different reasons in the past. He was a top college recruit when he graduated Bergen Catholic High School in 2003. Academic issues caused him problems at the University of Memphis. He later joined the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans) in 2005, playing in the development league and internationally until 2011.

Banks’ prior run-ins with the law include being one of four men arrested after a high-speed chase in a stolen SUV in Sparta in 2011. At the time he was also being sought for his alleged role in a string of burglaries. Other arrests include domestic violence, assault on a police officer and burglary.

Banks is one of any number of young men whose future once seemed bright but now are involved in the criminal justice system.
